Erythrocyte-erythrocyte aggregation dynamics under shear flow

چکیده
Red blood cells (RBCs) -- erythrocytes suspended in plasma tend to aggregate and form rouleaux. During aggregation the first stage consists formation of RBC doublets [Blood cells, molecules, diseases 25, 339 (1999)]. While aggregates are normally dissociated by moderate flow stresses, under some pathological conditions becomes irreversible, which leads high viscosity vessel occlusion. We perform here two-dimensional simulations study doublet dynamics shear different its impact on rheology. sum up our results a rich phase diagram parameter space (flow strength, adhesion energy) showing four types configurations dynamics. find that membrane tank-treading plays an important role disaggregation, agreement with experiments RBCs. A remarkable feature found is when single cell performs tumbling (by increasing vesicle internal viscosity) formed due (even very weak) remains stable even strong rate. It seen this regime increase rate induces adaptation conformation allowing resist cell-cell detachment. show normalized effective suspension increases significantly energy, fact should affect perfusion microcirculation.

Mechanism of erythrocyte aggregation and sedimentation.
Unstirred suspensions of erythrocytes form stable spherical aggregates of uniform size. The radius of the spheres depends upon the suspending medium and the hematocrit. Erythrocyte suspensions will undergo sedimentation only after these aggregates are formed. Aggregation is a two-step process: first, erythrocytes associate in long chains (rouleau formation). Next, these chains form spheres of u...
متن کاملIntramembrane Particle Aggregation in Erythrocyte Ghosts
We have used freeze-etching and SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis to study the conditions under which the intramembrane particles of the human erythrocyte ghost may be aggregated. The fibrous membrane protein, spectrin, can be almost entirely removed from erythrocyte ghosts with little or no change in the distribution of the particles. However, after spectrin depletion, particle aggregatio...
متن کاملInteraction energies in lectin-induced erythrocyte aggregation
Two N-acetylgalactosamine-reactive lectins, Helix pomatia (HPA) and Dolichos biflorus (DBA), were used to study the energies involved in cell-cell interactions through the specific binding of these lectins to their membrane receptors on genotype AO human erythrocytes (red blood cells) (RBCs). The energy required to dissociate a unit of aggregated membrane area (gamma d) of two RBCs bridged by l...
